A friend of mine once said to me, ‘You have to be in the right mood to buy jeans’, which made me laugh at the time, but lately I’ve decided all you need to be is insanely patient if you’re a man of a certain height, trying to find jeans in the UK highstreet – because it’s virtually impossible!
I’m not an unusual size, ok I’m perhaps 1 inch shorter than the national average, but at 5′8″ I’m hardly a mini me. Why then do shops not stock 30 inch leg jeans? The amount of shops I go in and ask if they have my size, only to get the response – no we don’t stock jeans in anything less than a 32 inch leg – it just makes me so angry! Why not!?
Perhaps I should move to France, not only is the weather better, but apparently they are on average 1 inch shorter than us UK blokes. Or maybe I just just pop over the channel to buy my jeans, although with the current state of the Euro/Pound I think my money won’t go all that far any more unfortunately.
Gap used to be my savior; their range of jean sizes was fantastic with something to fit virtually anybody – unfortunately though in recent years the quality of their jeans have deteriorated considerably. They used to be made with good quality jean fabric – I know I still have the jeans to prove it. But my most recent visits to Gap have been very disappointing…
But anyway – all is not lost as I found a new fantastic way to shop for jeans in the UK. No longer will I be tediously traipsing around shop after shop feeling ever more discriminated against. The Internet has yet again come to my rescue. I’ve always been a bit nervous about buying something as important as my next favourite pair of jeans from a website, but after various failed highstreet shopping attempts and the pointless trying on of hundreds of badly fitting jeans I thought I had nothing to loose. I know exactly what I want, Bootcut jeans, 32 inch waist and 30 inch legs. So off to JohnLewis.com I went, via a search for lee jeans of course to get a range of the prices available.
All you need to do is specify what you want and choose your size. All done in less than 10 minutes and a new pair of jeans are on the way. If they don’t fit – send them back (check their returns conditions of course) but as long as they are resaleable and it’s within a certain time frame they’re normally ok with it.
So that’s how I’m jeans shopping in the future – one of life’s little problems finally solved.
One of my favourite presents recently was a binary watch I was given for my birthday last year. Not only does it look cool, but people think you’re amazingly clever when you explain to them how you tell the time!
In reality, most of the time I have no clue what time it is at all… But I still proudly wear my watch and impress anyone I can with my binary skills. Check out the lovely range of binary watches on the site.
Getting fit doesn’t have to be boring and there’s still plenty of time to get in shape for summer 2010. Boxing might not seem like the obvious choice, especially if you’re quite keen on keeping your ‘good’ looks, but it’s great fun and really great exercise too.
It doesn’t have to cost much to setup either, all you need is a bit of room to hang a punch bag (rafters in a garage works just fine), and some gloves and you’re good to go. Of course this did prove a little bit of a problem in my old flat as there was barely enough room to swing a cat, let alone a punch bag! If that’s the case, then local Gyms more often than not have punch bags. If you have the room, but no rafters, then you can get bags on stands… Not sure how well they’d stand up to much punishment, but probably good for beginners.
Another alternative to the standard heavy punch bag (or if like me you’re worried that it might all pull the garage down) then you could get a speed bag… It’s still lots of fun and great to get those stressed feelings out!
It might sound like a strange Valentines present (and in fact it is really) but this year I was lucky enough to be given some focus pads so we could ‘get fit’ together. I have to say it’s pretty funny seeing a girl punching – she looks more like a rabbit than anything else, but I guess it all comes with practise, and I’m certainly not taking the mickey out of female boxers on the whole – now that WOULD be a mistake (yes I’ve seen Million Dollar Baby).
If you’re looking for the full Rocky Experience, then a skipping rope is also pretty handy. I’m still to start using mine… The whole concept feels a bit girly and strange, but if it’s good enough for Rocky it’s good enough for me!
